Algeria, a powerhouse in Africa, suffered again.
Algeria lost 0-1 in the third Group D match of the 2023 African Cup of Nations against Mauritania at Lefe Stadium in Bouquet, Ivory Coast, on the 24th (Korea time).
Algeria lost in the 37th minute after allowing Mohammed Yali to score the first goal.
Algeria previously drew 1-1 with Angola and 2-2 with Burkina Fasoa. They had to beat Mauritania to advance to the round of 16, but instead they lost and finished at the bottom of Group D.
It is a shocking result. Algeria is a powerhouse in Africa and the FIFA ranking is No. 4 on the continent, at 30th. It is overwhelmingly higher compared to Burkina Faso (57th), Angola (117th), and Mauritania (105).
In addition, they have high-quality players such as Riyad Mahrez (Al Ahli), Nabil Bentaleb (Lil), Aisa Mandi (Villarreal), and Ramiz Lerroch (Feyenoord). Most of the entries are powerful teams in Europe, but they packed up early without playing properly.
Algeria is also famous for bringing nightmares to Korea in the 2014 Brazil World Cup. At that time, Algeria became a sensation by playing aggressive and dynamic soccer.
Algeria, however, has been going downhill in recent years. Although it won the 2019 Nations Cup, it suffered the humiliation of being eliminated from the group stage once again following the 2021 tournament. It also missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Algeria, which upset Brazil 10 years ago, seems to be missing.
