St. Louis, which has already recruited veteran starting pitchers such as Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson in the free agent market, has significantly strengthened its mound by including Gray, one of the biggest free agent pitchers this winter.

Gray started 32 games for the Minnesota Twins in the 2023 season, pitched 184 innings, and recorded 8 wins, 8 losses, and an ERA of 2.79. Although he only had eight wins, Gray ranked second in American League Cy Young Award voting, following Gerrit Cole (NYY), who won the Cy Young Award unanimously.

Gray, a right-hander born in 1989, debuted in the big league with the Oakland Athletics in 2013 and played 11 seasons with the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, and Minnesota. He appeared in 279 career games, pitched 1,571 innings, and had a record of 98 wins, 85 losses, and a 3.47 earned run average.

Gray rejected Minnesota’s qualifying offer and entered the free agent market. As the total contract value is more than $50 million, Minnesota will receive a competitive balance A-round compensation pick between the first and second rounds of the 2024 rookie draft. And St. Louis, which was not subject to the luxury tax or revenue sharing in the 2023 season, loses the second-highest draft pick in the 2024 season and also loses the international signing limit of $500,000.

Although the winter meetings have not started yet, the pitcher free agent market is moving quickly with the departure of Gray following Aaron Nola.
